Havana Cultura

Havana Cultura (formerly Little Havana Festival) returns to Galway's Latin Quarter over the June Bank Holiday weekend, 1st-3rd June.

From the evening of Friday, 1st June through to the Sunday, Galway's Latin Quarter will be alive with Latin music, dance, street entertainment, art and cultural events. Over 60 free events will be taking place over the weekend, courtesy of Havana Club, the Authentic Cuban Rum.

Returning to the Havana Cultura stage this year are the legendary Cuban All Stars, the eclectic Sabor Cubano and the Cuban Jazz Project. International performers La Tinto Bros., local heroes the Disconauts and Galway's very own eight-piece salsa band Cuba Libre, will also feature. Groovalizacion DJs will bring their vibes, grooves and cultural fusions to the Latin Quarter, with a host of other bands and DJs from around the world, ensuring the pulse of Havana is felt throughout the city.

International Quilt Festival

International Quilt Festival of Ireland 2012

Unlike other quilt festivals and conventions held around the world, where all the functions take place in an enormous convention hall, the International Quilt Festival of Ireland will be located on the beautiful NUI campus in Galway, Ireland, where a special Quilter’s Village is being designed on the banks of the River Corrib. Here you’ll be able to walk around and enjoy all the special attractions this village has to offer.

There will be a Quilter’s Market where you can buy everything from Irish crafts to traditional Irish Brown Bread, the Fat Quarters Chocolate Shop, a School House for our hands-on quilting classes, a Quilter's Canteen that seats over 800 people, over a dozen special quilt exhibits on display in various buildings throughout the village, and the Town Hall, where you will find over 50 vendors who have created booths to tease you with their latest state-of-the-art products and services!

Volvo Ocean Race 2012

The Volvo Ocean Race Festival will take place from 30th June - 8th July 2012, when a fleet of up to 12 Volvo ‘Open 70’ class boats will arrive at Galway Docks on the penultimate leg from Lorient in France.
 
The final leg is expected to be a three-day race around Ireland, which will offer double points, before finishing in Galway Bay. As well as playing host to a festival which will last about 10 days, Galway City will also host the closing ceremony for the Ocean Race.
Galway will be the first finish city in the event's history to stage an inshore race after the final leg.

The Fastnet Rock is the last landmark the sailors will catch sight of before their final sprint up the west coast of Ireland to Galway.

The race will visit eight stopover ports on five continents and race through four oceans, in under nine months. The Volvo Open 70's will cover over 39,270 nautical miles racing around the globe.

Galway Film Fleadh

The Galway Film Fleadh – Ireland’s leading film festival, is a six day international film event held every July and welcomes a mad diversity of filmmaking from around the world.  The Fleadh is very much a film lovers’ festival, and attracts directors, actors, cinematographers and artists of all generations and cultural backgrounds. Galway Arts Festival

Galway Arts Festival is Ireland's largest international arts festival. Founded in 1978 it has grown into an event with a significant reputation where, in 2011, there were 162,000 attendances at 176 performances, talks and exhibitions in 27 venues over 14 days. The Festival showcases a wide variety of international artists alongside the best of Irish talent and includes music (popular, contemporary, jazz, world, classical and traditional), theatre (indoor and outdoor), visual arts, dance, talks, discussions, family events and comedy in its programme.

Galway Races

In over one hundred years of racing at Ballybrit, the Galway Races has gone from strength to strength with now in excess of 150,000 poeple attending the week long festival every year. Recognised as the greatest mid-summer festival in Ireland, punters from all over the world visit the famous race track year after year for a great mixture of racing and old Irish craic. When the racing is over they stream into the city to carry late into the night.
